The Late, Great Damo Suzuki...
Shaman. Free Spirit. Cosmic Jammer. Music Warrior. Sonic Maven. Psychedelic Mystic. Accidental Anarchist. Inveterate Traveller...
Damo Suzuki left this world last week. A life force that will be missed by many. His boundless creative energy moves on to its next cosmic adventure…
Here are just a few words I’ve picked up on my digital journeys this week, paying reverence to Damo’s life and his contributions towards music and beyond. A humble collection of wonderful words, thoughts, notes and profound love for a being who brought so much to us throughout his time with us.
“Everyone should have their own goal, own opinion, own experience and find their own lifestyle, because everybody is unique and everybody has a talent. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come automatically, you must find it; if you don’t move nothing is coming. Everybody is individual, you don’t have to compare with anybody, just compare yourself to yourself.”
On his own Sound Carrier Network —
“I create time and space of the moment with local sound carriers or musicians, that means everywhere I travel alone, I have different sound carriers and also music is different. I’m networking everywhere with this movement to understanding to share energy which I believe is the weapon against violence. We are composing pieces on spot call it “instant composing” and every time new experience for sound carriers on stage and audience… I have nets of sound carriers all over the world… so, that’s why simply called Network.”
“last night at dinner with our studio crew in Paris, we were talking about Damo’s practice of cooking an abundance of food for his band prior to every recording session, and that the act of communing makes the music sound better. i’ll think of him at every meal here from now on” -
via X“Suzuki was an artist par excellence because his philosophy towards art was the same as his philosophy towards life… Everywhere he went, and with whoever he was with, he seized every opportunity to make the most of what was present.” - Joshua Minsoo Kim (
) for Rolling Stone“Damo refused to speak in any tongue but the intuitive, a spring of novelty from the depths to embody what lay in cosmic potential” - Spiritczualic Enhancement Center
This Wire Magazine article written by Mike Barnes
“I make instant music as it’s much closer to life itself when you improvise. If you have composition then it is not life, it’s business. I only wanted music, not business.”
Time for me to say a huge thank you for subscribing and for all your incredible support so far. I couldn’t have imagined that Sonic Tapestries would be receiving this much love in its first few weeks but it’s all thanks to YOU for reading, sharing and supporting!
