Sounds On Grief
Announcing "Deuil" - a new exclusive work published as part of a reflective multi-disciplinary project from Ghent based label Objects & Sounds
Deuil is the French word that translates as mourning.
My life's path has taken me to France, where I now live.
As someone currently outside of this space — a place of mourning — I couldn’t imagine bringing myself into it. To be in such an intense and powerful emotional state.
I think of all those dear to me. How they will one day no longer be there. How I will one day no longer be here.
To join that community of souls who have made that passage into the eternal, the unknown, the unimaginable…
We hear that word often when talking about grief — unimaginable...
In composing this work I reflected on this unimaginable inevitability and saw this as an opportunity to create an offering to grief.
An offering to be made to a hopefully distant place, one we will all experience.
One where we will all, inevitably, meet...
“What you’ll hear, read, and see across this project is a collection of sounds, poems, and visuals from 21 individuals around the world that captures the complex, inexplicable nature of grief—the longing, vulnerability, confusion, anger, hope, fragility, emptiness, and expansiveness that develop in the space of losing the ones we hold most dear. We’re incredibly honoured to hold and share these deeply personal experiences of grief from the Sounds On Grief contributors with you.”
— Allie Hatch : Objects and Sounds
Objects and Sounds is a Ghent-based record store and label that celebrates everyday moods and boundless creative expression. Their curation, attention and investment in developing, nurturing and sharing a catalogue of beautiful beings, artists and conceptions continues to inspire and delight me. If you happen to be passing through that area, do not hesitate to pass by and check their out their unique space!
I’d like to take this opportunity to extend a huge, warm thank you to everyone at Objects and Sounds for their work on this project which I’m so proud to be a part of — Allie Hatch for her co-ordination of this project, Aimee Lara for her support and curation, Tom Ball for his wonderfully attentive mix and Mathieu Savenay for his attentive and delicate mastering work.
I responded to the open call for this project back in January of this year. The intention was to invite artists to present their own creative expressions of grief. This shared journey has come to life as a compilation and book, giving meaningful shape to the oftentimes formless cloud of grief.
You can listen to the Sounds on Grief project in full via the Objects & Sounds Bandcamp page and if you’re interested in purchasing yourself a copy of this beautifully compiled work, you can do so by visiting their website :

The project features contributions from many wonderful artists from across the globe. Despite being drawn to each work in a different way, I’m particularly fond of this work by French artist Emmanuel Horquet aka
